When writing comedy, you must take care to be very serious. ;)

It's still applicable, jokes after all can be murdered, take the "well that was weird" or whatever of the MSheU. Explaining a joke isn't the only way to murder it. Yelling at the top of your lungs "LOOK I MADE A FUNNY PLEASE LAUGH" also creates corpses. So, some seriousness, so respect is warranted, even when in the realm of the irreverent.

The jester is one of the most serious people, for if he doesn't amuse, or fails to amuse in the right way, why he'll lose his head!

Or as Danny Kaye sang in "The Court Jester": "A jester unemployed is nobody's fool!"

Never heard that one before!

"There is one proviso: if there is any satire present in the tale, one thing must not be made fun of, the magic itself.'

Anyone who writes fantasy of a humorous or satiric nature, in any artistic format, has largely abided by this request. The old man was right on the money here.

Agreed, it is remarkable how on the money he was on so much.
