Oh, I loved that film! I think you're right in saying it didn't get much attention because it wasn't wholly a war film, or particularly angsty. That was exactly why I enjoyed it, though - that and the wonderful atmospheric score.
Hold up a moment. There were supposed to be more movies?????? Look, I enjoy watching Captain American throw his Frisbee, but I also would watch the shit out of a trilogy about Tolkien's life.
Oh, I have not heard of this film, it sounds incredible. Thank you for posting about it. If you have never read it, the book “A Hobbit, A Wardrobe, and a Great War” is a really good book.
I watched this movie a few years after it came out and really enjoyed it. Although the scene where Tolkien's mentor and priest tells him he cannot marry Edith on account of being a different religion and he reacts honestly kind of like a petulant child was cringe-worthy and inaccurate as Tolkien knew full well she would have to convert and accepted it. Still a great movie, it's just that one scene that bothered me, probably because our secular age doesn't get that part. Or doesn't want to.
I loved this film when I saw it; you’re definitely right that it didn’t get the attention it deserved!
So: the man who created the most famous fantasy novels of them all lived an epic life himself...
