Simply glorious. In your essay I read much of what I had to research back in the day so I could create some of my characters. A man like Captain Anit'za, who comes from the ancient blood of Dzenta'rii Seekers. One who leads not mere underlings but honorable friends, who yearn to follow his every command and would stand by him beyond the gates of hell if need be.
Great article. Like how you went through all the sub archetypes and the films they relate to. Been thinking more broadly of the 'patriarch' archetype, which would simply be the king archetype but bestowed upon any man with responsibility over others, like in business, sports, and most importantly, a family. Is there one specific to this that you know of?
I can think of one, but I tend to think of it primarily in the familial context, I’ve been thinking about doing such an essay. I’m thinking there’s definitely enough meat on the bone to merit one.
I’d say the King embodies it on a macro level for a whole nation, but a Patriarch would be the father on the micro-level or of simply a family.
Okay cool ... you should. Would love to read it. Thinking about it now, I wonder if one would argue that the King archetype needn't be changed to a Patriarch archetype, because, it is through the narrative structure of the King archetype that a real life Patriarch, such as a leader or a Dad, is inspired.
And by the way, a bit of appreciation for your title, ‘The One Archetype to Rule Them All’. Titles are hard to come up with, and don’t receive enough respect! I sometimes sit there for ages, confounded as to what to come up with, and end up using something mediocre.
Just wanted to add, you’ll figure it out, your essays are good so with time you’ll figure out catchy titles just remember; ‘clickbait’ and ‘hyperbolic/exaggeration’ is the way to go!
Oh yeah I gotta admit I struggle with coming up with title names, and sometimes just throw them all in there and make them as click-baity as possible.
Honestly, I actually prefer titles like ‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘the Hour of the Dragon’, ‘the Silmarillion’, ‘the Children of Hurin’, ‘Darkspire Conspiracy’, ‘Brotherhood of the Gemstone’ or ‘Quatre Paladins’
But the titles I use hereon Substack are meant to grab other people’s attention not mine.
Bear in mind though I’ve years of youtube failure for experience, I learnt how to title stuff there by screwing up for 3 years then finally figured it out. But the algorithm is too difficult to overcome over there.

I’m glad you liked it, seems like characters like Anit’za Gimli, Thorin ought to be the norm and yet they are not even where Dwarves are concerned.
I think I should send you another small excerpt in the chat so you can see for yourself, mon ami.
D’accord
Best essay yet
Thanks!

Good point, I could still see a need to write an essay about it.
