I think Japanese horror has something distinctive. They have their own way of experiencing fear (the kyōfu, right?). But you’re better at explaining it than I am. :D
Sorry for the late response, and yeah Japanese horror has its own feel to it. They either fill it too much with jump scares or they go very much psychological with it. Taiheiki is not stated to be a horror, but it is revealed in the last episode that it could very well be a horror series due to a single scene. And then they do a semi-recap of sorts, and you realize it could be interpreted that way. But this is strictly left in the viewer's hands not the director's so that you have to ponder.
