Well, I never thought I’d agree with a comparison between Mother Gothel and Sebastian, but I can see how their motives are similar. At least Sebastian’s actions weren’t blatantly selfish and deceiving.
The song is part of the standard Broadway musical format in that it provides a visual showcase while still serving to advance the plot and theme of the film as a whole.

Very good point, and Sebastian at least got a redemption arc and is likeable where Gothel is a despicable sort (good villainess though).
