The Fall into Further Banality - House of the Dragon & Martin's Ongoing Humiliation
Yes, another Martin trashing essay
Something fascinating takes place in the book Paradise Lost. As the story progresses Lucifer changes, he goes from the ‘Morning-Star’ to ramping around on his belly, a humiliated, pathetic figure the Angels pretty much piss on. There is something that a professor once said in a documentary (I forget which one) but it was that Satan in that story, starts off gloriously but becomes ever more pathetic, because this is the nature of evil, it is part of the ‘banality’ of evil.
Now I’m not saying that GRRM is evil, by no means do I think him a truly evil person on a calibre of the Devil. I really don’t. Martin is not beyond hope in my eyes. I may not like him or his philosophy, but this show- yeah okay he’s a producer of so it is partly his fault, just as it is also those of the execs involved. Geeze this guy and his crew just cannot deliver. But I repeat, I’m NOT saying he’s evil. I don’t know him personally so won’t go there, and as there’s been no sex-scandals or any such stuff beyond the strange stuff he writes about and thinks about, I don’t know if I’d describe him as evil, so won’t make that leap. I repeat don’t take this as me insulting him, just his work.
All I mean is that his work like Satan in Paradise Lost suffers from the ‘banality of evil’ it is steadily disintegrating and collapsing. It is truthfully becoming ever more pathetic, so that now one cannot resist the urge to laugh at it as scornfully as possible.
