Our Crowdfund
If you’ve been paying attention you might well have heard that I’ve begun preparations for a small Crowdfund. The inspiration for the project came from a number of Substackers who petitioned to have us Bros Krynn help assemble a number of stories into a single volume.
The idea being that there’d be a contest to see who might be part of what became Steelhearts Fantasy Anthology. The contest did not go through as there weren’t enough applicants but we collected 5 stories and from there
began the process of editing the stories with us, and then we Bros Krynn threw ourselves into marketing the Crowdfund as best we can.If you want the pre-launch Link here it is, do please check it out.
Please do click on this link and read what we have on offer. The amount of money we need to complete this Crowdfund is but 500$ CAD. Let me repeat that; CAD not USD. I stress this part because we do not wish to mislead or confuse people.
Why do We Need This Book?
This I’m sure is the question you must be asking yourself. It’s a good one I think.
That said, the reason I wish to help my fellow writers of fiction from Substack is that I see something happening in the modern day. We live in an age where there’s a crisis of meaning. This crisis has been brewing since the start of the Industrial Revolution which began the process of dis-Enchanting this world.
The reason that this is important to know is because of the nature of the Industrial Revolution is one that stands at odds with human nature. While some might comment that humanity is inherently lazy (which is true to an extent), we’re just not built to be lazy. We’re supposed to struggle, to endeavour and to fight for what we want, now this isn’t to say that everything that the Industrial Revolution accomplished was bad. But one of the things that it messed up for us was that it left a great chunk of the population feeling idle.
It removed the meaning of labour from humanity. That is to say that people stopped feeling as though their contributions to society mattered.
What it also did was pull the sons’ on the farm from the countryside and into the cities so that every country in the world began to urbanizing at break-neck speed. Once centres of culture the cities of our various nations soon transformed into cesspits that were more focused on lines on a graph, rather than on culture. I emphasize this because it must be emphasized that something was lost. Something more than sons, brothers and fathers in the unending wars of the 20th century.
We lost with them a kind of older world. A nobler one if you think about it. Nobler in the sense that there was some sort of connection to the land, to the trees, and to the grass, flowers and also the glens, valleys, rivers and forests.
We have lost something of Folkloric Man.
We have been cut off, as though we could hear, or see, or smell, or taste before and now cannot.
It is as though we have been deafened. Not unlike the Jedi Exile from Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II, we have been cut off and dis-Enchanted. The knowledge of this was carried by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and Robert Erwin Howard.
Both men sought to re-Enchant this world. Both men sought to restore something to this world, to fight back against the deafening of Modern Man’s loss of Meaning.
The Loss of Meaning is the biggest travesty and tragedy that we’ve had to endure. It is something that has broken millions of men and left them feeling as though they do not have a place where they belong. Some react with suicide, others cling tighter to God or to their hobbies or what have you.
The two great authors of the 20th century wished to write for people new Mythologies. They set out primarily out of love for the land around them, and for their loved ones but also because they felt they needed to tell the stories they were recounting to people.
It is for this reason that I’ve stepped into this role alongside Heywood as we’ve been blessed with a decent platform so might as well see if we can’t employ it to help others. The thing about mythologies like those of Tolkien and Howard is that they weren’t born in a vacuum. They were born from a concentration of circumstance, fortune and knowledge as well as good connections.
Howard had Lovecraft and Noel, Tolkien had Lewis & Edith.
But what they also had was some people willing to take a risk on them, publish their works and help them see their dream pushed forward.
This is the goal with this Crowdfund. The goal being to re-enchant the world, to market and push forward other Fantasy stories to enchant and woo the world. The stories as all know were about overwhelming odds, and the greatness of valour and honour.
The perks are mostly novels that we Bros Krynn have published so that you can get a signed copy of the Anthology alongside Crown of Blood and Caladbohlg. Each little bit helps.
You had me at mythic.
Looking forward to this.
