Chivalry Rule #III: Thou shalt respect all weaknesses, and shalt constitute thyself the defender of them.
This rule goes without saying. It is the embodiment of the ideal held up by Othinn in the Norse episodes of Hercules Legendary Journeys, wherein the old Aesir says that ‘one should stand with the strong, but only ever in defence of the weak’. This lesson is one that wins him the respect of Hercules, who vows to save him and reverse the events brought on by Loki.
Truth is that under modernism this ideal has been rejected as all (especially on social-media) have rejected the ideal of protecting the weak. Under the current beliefs that one must toil and toil and toil until one has been driven to an early grave, weakness is to be scorned. Just work harder is the mantra, just as the left scorn weakness and vulnerability, and anyone who does not abide by the folly of centralisation of power in the hands of the few. The nature of power is that those who have it are inclined to abuse it, always.
Power and strength stand in opposition of one another. It takes strength to resist, and to stand for one’s ideals, to defend the helpless and the weak just as it requires weakness to screech and reject reason. Strength is a virtue that exists only in those who sacrifice, in those who give and those who uphold the less fortunate and those who depend upon you. It is through the virtue of valour, of kindness that the truth of one’s strength is exposed.
Those who stand together and uphold power though, or a monopoly of it are in truth weak. They are guilty of having weakness of character, they are foolish and likely to give into every depravity, every sin imaginable. They lack discipline, and lack clear insight into the way of the world.
When Aurelian forged the Roman Empire anew, and defied the odds, bringing together through his character, convictions and genius an Empire torn asunder, he was cast aside by the envious, the weak and the Empire broke once more. When in the earlier Republic era, Scipio Africanus and his brother Lucius conquered the likes of Barca time and again, defeated the King of Macedonia and the Seleucid Empire it was the Senate that rejected them.
This was an act by the powerful in rejection of the strong, just as they were to later do much the same to the Grachii brothers. The powerful always reject the strong, the urban the rural and the genocidal the gentle and the fanatic the rationale.
Defence of the weak is the natural inclination of the strong, the truly strong of character. Because if one was not to show this inclination, one would demonstrate that oneself is not strong. The weak and the helpless are not eternally trapped in that role, if you are weak to-day you may well become strong tomorrow at which time, the once-weak man shall defend in time he who defended him.
It is also the natural inclination of men, especially those who know Christ, know his Word and who love him to wish to defend those around them. Just as it is the natural instinct of the Celtic people (French, Scots & Irish) and for the Japanese, the reason for this is the natural proclivity for honour that these civilisations have. They are strong cultures and strong people by their very nature. They always have been, and it is the Celts and the Japanese who always shone brightest in the darkest of ages, and who have always defined what weakness is and how best to defend those lesser, and who long to do so at all times.
When intoxicated by passion though, sometimes the duty to protect another maybe forgotten. To avoid this, prayer, love for a good woman and respect for one’s limits helps to keep from making mistakes, remember this and that one’s duty as a man and a knight is to serve as a buckler against the wicked.
But man is often weak if he is alone, therefore to be strong one must have love and brotherhood. Love for one’s wife and children are necessary to strength, for a good woman strengthens a man and makes him more of a man in his heart. Brotherhood can turn the weakest of men, the singular legionnaire into the mightiest of Legios. It was not lone Romans who conquered the whole of the Mediterranean but by banding together that they conquered it. This conquest was natural and necessary even as it was tragic for individual cultures in some ways, but so long as the Legios stood the people within the boundaries of the Empire throve.
One must remember this value, and how in the myths of King Arthur, he and Gawain and the rest of the knights (minus Lancelot) always sought to uphold this virtue in particular. Defence of the helpless was their foremost virtue for a reason, it is something that when writing knights of an honourable character must be shown and must be honoured. A true knight is after all a man, who would give his life for another and who would do so humbly, for he has no wish to grandstand about it. The virtuous act is its own reward after-all.
Great article! Chivalry is something we need these days. A good man must always put the needs of women before his own, regardless of what feminism or the manosphere claims!
doing good when nobody is looking is no longer a thought ..
but the powers that run the financial elite have missed a basic economic fact..
life on the ground has to be good to great in order for their AI mechanization is fruitful in a way that they wish..
the locks have proven that but their memories are short but pleading ignorant is not a defense in any court let alone the final judgement ..
